Fostering Healthy Eating Habits: Monash ELC’s Approach to Mealtime and Nutrition Education

At Monash Early Learning Centre (Monash ELC), mealtime is more than just a routine; it’s a comprehensive educational experience. The centre’s daily menu is meticulously planned to introduce children to a variety of food groups, ensuring they receive a balanced diet crucial for their growth and development.

Meeting the children’s nutritional requirements

The educational journey begins with the menu itself. Monash ELC’s daily menu encompasses breakfast, morning tea, a cooked lunch, afternoon tea and a late snack. Each meal is crafted to include elements from essential food groups – fruits, vegetables, dairy, grains and proteins. This variety not only caters to the nutritional needs of the children but also exposes them to different tastes and textures. By doing so, the centre educates children on the importance of a balanced diet in a practical, engaging way.

Further extending this educational aspect, Monash ELC displays its weekly menus in every room and also on a daily menu board located in the entry. This transparency allows families to stay informed about their children’s daily nutrition. It opens up avenues for discussions about healthy eating at home, thereby reinforcing the lessons learned at the centre.

Helping children become healthy and active

The centre’s commitment to promoting health and well-being from a young age is further evidenced by its support for the “Munch & Move” initiative by NSW Health. This initiative aligns with the centre’s philosophy by emphasising the importance of healthy eating habits and physical activity for young children. By participating in this initiative, Monash ELC demonstrates its dedication to nurturing not just the minds but also the bodies of its young learners.

Mealtime at Monash ELC is also an opportunity for children to learn about self-care and independence. Involving them in food preparation activities, the centre helps them develop fine motor skills and social manners. This hands-on experience with food not only educates them about what they eat but also fosters a sense of responsibility and autonomy.

A comprehensive approach for your child’s well-being

Monash ELC’s approach to mealtime is a well-rounded educational experience. By introducing children to a variety of food groups, keeping families informed and supporting initiatives like “Munch & Move,” the centre plays a pivotal role in laying a foundation for lifelong healthy habits. This comprehensive approach ensures that children at Monash ELC are not just well-fed but are also well-educated about the importance of nutrition in their overall well-being.
